According to statistics at the Direct Selling Organization, It's rather easy to understand why so many women are attracted to direct sells. You can work from home, but you don't need to be isolated. You get to meet other adults at your home parties as well as at your company trainings. You can make great part-time earnings. There's no glass ceiling and no boss hovering over you. And when you do your job right, your company rewards you with things like jewelry and exotic travel as opposed to potted plants and pens. Why is it then that only 2% of the individuals in this industry experience great success?
I'm going to share a very personal story with you because I'm certain that the reason you'll find it interesting and somewhat humorous is that you'll be able to completely relate it to your own life. About twenty years ago I lived in a small mountain town in Colorado. One Wednesday evening after church, a girlfriend and I went to the local pub (this place was the local hangout for sober people as well as the tipsy inclined) to play a round or two of darts - a game I loved playing ever since I was in college. On this particular evening there was a cute guy throwing darts by himself at the dart board next to us, and after a few moments he approached my girlfriend and me and asked if he could play the winner of our game. We agreed. Wanting to play with the cute guy, I quickly stepped up my game, steadily beat my girlfriend and moved on to play this interesting new opponent. Now here's the part I think you'll find most fascinating. Once I started playing with the guy, I discovered a champion dart player inside of me that I'd never met before. I distinctly remember having to act as if everything I was doing was normal. And I'll tell you, it wasn't easy. I so wanted to jump up and down and yell, "WOW! Did you see the way I closed the 20's and the 19's in one turn? This is amazing!" But I didn't do that. Nope. I acted completely calm as if this was my average dart game. And why did I act as if it were completely normal? I bet you know why. I was trying to impress the guy, of course.
It's amazing what we can get ourselves to achieve There are many times I've discovered myself going way beyond what I think I'm capable of achieving and in every instance there was someone there that motivated me in some way to do that. I can't even count how many times I've dragged my way into a 5:30 spin class (Uhm, that's 5:30 AM!) and have decided ahead of time that I'm just going to take it easy. Then I walk into class only to find an instructor telling me how we're going to do hills or speed training today. And guess what? I always end up giving 110 percent and working my tail off. My only explanation for this "Incredible Hulk" behavior is my desire to impress the instructor, the coach. I know I'm not alone. You work with a coach when you want ideas and motivation to improve what you're doing, and you especially work with a coach for accountability reasons - so you too will go beyond what you think you're capable of achieving because you want to impress your coach by doing what she tells you to do. The other day as I was thinking about the difference coaching makes, I realized that I wouldn't push myself even 30% as much without my spinning coach. AND THEN IT HIT ME LIKE A TON OF BRICKS! How many times in the corporate world does a top sales person get moved into a leadership position only to find himself out of his league? That's often referred to as The Peter Principle after Dr. Laurence J. Peter who maintained that in a hierarchy, every employee tends to rise to his level of incompetence. You see it's one thing to sell. It's a completely different thing to develop leaders! In direct sales, just like in corporate America, you get promoted by being good at your job. So if you manage to sell a few thousand dollars of your company's product and you recruit a few people, you'll find that you're given a new title and you'll start earning more money. But getting a leadership title doesn't make you good at developing leaders. You see it's far more likely that your upline leader is a good salesperson than a developer of leaders. And that's the reason why only 2% of direct sales consultants experience the highest levels of success - they don't have a coach in front of them that knows how to push them to achieve more than what they think they're capable of doing. Once that insight hit me like a ton of bricks, I realized that as a proven developer of leaders, I needed to offer the serious women in the direct sales industry the opportunity to achieve 30 - 50% more in their direct sales business. I understand how they can hold you accountable for things, but when it comes to improving your business tactics, there's no way they can offer the needed suggestions. If they've never booked a home party, they can't very well tell you what you're doing wrong or how to improve your techniques now can they?
