Teaming Up to Increase Prospects
By Tammy Stanley

A while back Godiva Chocolates and BMW teamed up to run a special promotion. Now why would a chocolate company team up with a car company? I'll show you why in a few moments.

The reason I know about the promotion is because I'm on the Godiva chocolate list. If you want to be on Godiva's list, all you have to do is visit their store and sign up (you can probably do it online as well).

I enjoy being on Godiva's list because I love to observe their marketing. I should mention that I often receive coupons for free products, so I do more than observe their marketing... I eat it up!!!

One day I received a mailing from BMW telling me that I would receive a free box of Godiva Chocolates, if I came in and test drove a new BMW. I thought this was brilliant marketing. After all, people willing to spend $30 a pound for chocolate are probably the kind of people who enjoy the finer things in life.

Obviously BMW got together with Godiva and said, "If you send out a mailing to your list with this promotion, we'll pay for each box of chocolates that is redeemed through the promotion."

Who could you team up with? As you enter this holiday season of parties, keep asking yourself that question. As you talk to people at the different holiday mixers, keep your eye out for a business that you could partner with. Sometimes the perfect blend may at first seem unlikely - just like a car company and a chocolate company joining forces.

If you team up with others, you'll find that together you can come up with all kinds of creative ideas. Stay in touch and constantly seek to improve, and definitely consider the obstacles you might encounter and how prepare for them ahead of time!

When my husband and I went to test drive a new BMW through the Godiva promotion we were very excited, until we arrived on the lot. When we walked into the show room, the salesman saw me holding the Godiva card and rashly said, "Oh, I'll just sign that for you, and you can forget about the test drive." Hubby and I just stood there dumbfounded. Finally, one of us said, "We actually wanted to test drive a car."

If that marketing campaign failed miserably, I have a good idea why. Obviously the sales force wasn't educated as to why the prospects holding the Godiva promotion in their hands were EXACTLY the kind of prospects they wanted to come on the BMW lot. After all, prospects who appreciate superb Belgium chocolate can probably appreciate superb German cars!

What would have happened if the sales force had prepared themselves for this promotion? What results would they have experienced had they discussed the probable obstacles and concerns of these prospects, and how to sell the value and possibility of driving a new Beemer?!

This served as a classic reminder to me that a great marketing idea can fail, if it isn't executed properly.
